A remarkable work by the young, London-based graphic designer and illustrator, Nikki Farquharson.
Below are her ongoing project, Mixed Media Girls, which gives the viewer a lot to look at. The collages appear innocent and sweet but at the same time exude sharp, pent-up energy that does not feel altogether safe. The title of the work is also wonderfully suggestive – or not, depending on how the reader wishes to understand it.
Farquharson’s work extends from the one-dimensional world to book projects and 3D pieces in which she often ponders and twists the meaning of words and proverbs, spies on conversations, and questions established truths.

Architect Gary Chang has lived in the same 32 square meter apartment since he was 14 years old, over 30 years ago.
“My whole family – my parents, my three younger sisters, and me – used to live here. To make ends meet, my parents also rented out one of the rooms to an outsider, a woman in her late twenties. Then the room was rented to her younger brother.”
Chang has since renovated the space four times and calls the apartment his ‘domestic transformer.’ Now the soul occupier, the apartment can be easily changed to suit Chang’s desire through the use of sliding wall units and fold away furniture, boasting over 20 different configurations.
“The key idea is that everyone could look into their home more carefully and into how better to optimise their resources, because space is a resource. There is no use making your home as if it is a perfect show flat but at the same time never using the space.”
Browsing internet seperti biasa, tiba2 nemuin sebuah artikel di New York Times berjudul "Architect, or Whatever", yang bercerita soal kegiatan arsitek-arsitek dari benua Amerika sana yang kehilangan pekerjaan atau kesulitan untuk dapet proyek perancangan seiring dengan adanya krisis ekonomi. Kreatif2 banget...(yah walopun ada juga yang malah jadi bener2 gak punya kemajuan)
Tapi yang terutama ada dua kegiatan yang gue baca di situ yang buat gue kagum banget....
Yang pertama seorang arsitek bernama John Morefield dari Seattle yang dengan cerdas menggerakkan kegiatan pribadi sederhana nya yang dia namakan “Architecture 5¢”, ketika dia membuka sebuah booth kecil di Ballard Farmers’ Market (semacam bazaar atau pasar kaget gitu) di kota Seattle. Project kecil dimana dia hanya berdiri di balik booth seharian selama Farmers' Market itu berjalan, dan dengan ramah menjawab pertanyaan dan permasalahan tiap orang mengenai desain dan arsitektur yang sederhana di rumah mereka, dari nasihat mengenai lemari, perabotan dan perombakan rumah, orang-orang tadi akhirnya membayar tiap jawaban, nasihat dan bahkan rancangan desain Morefield dengan bayaran 5 sen yang ditempatkannya dalam sebuah kaleng (tin can).

Yang kedua adalah kisah Natasha Case, yang kehilangan pekerjaannya sebagai desainer di Walt Disney Imagineering sekitar satu tahun yang lalu, bersama rekannya Freya Estreller, seorang real estate developer, yang akhirnya menjalankan bisnis penjualan home made ice cream sandwich buatan Case di Los Angeles. Dengan mengendarai sebuah truk es krim dengan hiasan2 karya sendiri dan diberi nama Coolhaus, Case dan Estreller menjual es krim2 buatan Case yang tiap menu nya diberi nama sesuai dengan nama2 arsitek internasional, seperti Frank Gehry (the strawberry ice cream and sugar cookie Frank Behry) dan Mies van der Rohe (the vanilla bean ice cream and chocolate chip cookie Mies Vanilla Rohe), dengan menjajakan tiap 'karya'nya di event-event kantor Frank Gehry, Walt Disney Imagineering dan the Disney Channel (bekas tempat bekerja Case).
